Many thanks for this invitation to submit ideas for the new committee to examine and others for it to follow up.

As I mentioned previously, the predecessor committee, chaired by William Graham, undertook a major inquiry into the bus and community transport industry and published its report only this year. We were very grateful to contribute to that work, and we feel that little is new in the industry that could be looked at by the new Economy, Infrastructure and Skills Committee. Indeed, there are still significant recommendations outstanding. We welcome warmly, however, the recent appointment of Nick Jones as designated Traffic Commissioner for Wales, something we had been advocating for almost twenty years.

The predecessor committee also held a short inquiry at the end of last year into travel arrangements for the Rugby World Cup matches held in Cardiff. One of the recommendations of that report highlighted the valuable and speedy help that the coach industry provided in the face of problems on the railway. We hope that this recommendation will be taken up by everyone involved with staging major events in Cardiff, and elsewhere, and that representatives from the coach industry are involved in advance planning discussions on these events, for example the UEFA finals next year.

I greatly value the constructive dialogue and exchange that has built up between CPT and the committee, especially the support staff, over recent years, and I look forward to continuing this during the Fifth Assembly.
